What I do to overcome learning barriers and debunk dyslexia
Students are assisted in developing strategies to overcome and cope with their specific learning barrier.
An initial assessment is carried out to identify what stage in learning your child is at, and what areas to address in particular . They then start their personalised learning programme, a system based on Orton-Gillingham learning principles, using a multi-sensory approach of games, repetition, kinesthetic activities and practice aided by technology and a variety of other media. Through these positive learning experiences, pupils build resilience and tenacity while developing a growth mindset. |
How it happens
The spelling and reading programme, a structured and multisensory system, is carried out in a one-to-one student-teacher instructional model. It is language-based and, through the initial assessment, individualised to the needs of the child. The structure is sequential and cumulative, allowing the learner to build on prior knowledge, while engaging cognitive skills and being flexible to the needs of the pupil.
The intensive, sequential phonics-based system teaches the basics of word formation before whole meanings. The method accommodates and utilises the three learning pathways through which people learn—visual, auditory and kinesthetic. |
Where it happens
Lessons can either be carried out in my learning space or at your home in a quiet, calm space with access to the internet. Lessons in my learning space are 60 minutes long while lessons in your home are 45 minutes long. The area of my travel is restricted to Hillcrest, Winston Park, Gillitts, Everton, Botha's Hill and Assagay (Kwazulu-Natal, R.S.A.).
